Convened in 2016, Sustainable Housing Leadership Consortium (SHLC) is a voluntary private sector consortium led by the CEOs of leading developers and financial institutions to address the inadequacy of resources in a rapidly urbanizing India. Founding members include real estate titans Godrej Properties, Mahindra Lifespace Developers, Shapoorji Pallonji Real Estate, Tata Housing Development Company and VBHC Value Homes, as well as financial institutions like HDFC and PNB Housing Finance Corporation. The SHLC also has the support and participation of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and concentrates its efforts in the fields of policy, technology and consumer awareness.
SHLC is committed to supporting the sustainable development of cities with focus on climate change mitigation, adaption and energy efficiency. The consortium is enabling policy actions and framework to encourage sustainable housing in the Indian real estate sector. It is also promoting a collaborative effort to propose the best practices that improve the accessibility of sustainable housing.
The consortium has also engaged the Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS) to structure policies on sustainable housing through a review of best global practices, domestic policy evaluation and stakeholder consultation. The IIHS has prioritised policy touch points that are critical in facilitating an enabling environment for scaling up sustainable housing in India. The SHLC is also working with TERI to identify more cost-effective building technologies.
