The objective of this project is to implement energy efficiency measures in the public street lighting system across five cities (Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Cuttack, Sambalpur and Rourkela) in the state of Odisha. IFC has provided transaction advisory support to the Government of Odisha (GoO) to identify a private sector partner to implement the project through a transparent competitive bid process. The project has helped the state in improving public lighting in the cities mentioned above, through the installation of modern technology that ensures higher illumination levels, reduced energy consumption, and leads to reductions in power costs.
The project has enabled the state government to set up better information systems, reducing the response time to consumer complaints as well. IFC expects to facilitate USD $5 million of climate financing, while reducing GHG emissions by 12,500 tons per year through this project. Through the implementation of this project, the number of streetlights has increased from 40,000 to about 75,000.
