Developing Sustainable Electric Mobility Solutions in Thane

Seventy-five percent of Thane’s trip share is composed of two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws, which degrades the city’s air quality. Eco-Cities India is collaborating with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to accelerate a shift toward the adoption of e-vehicles for commuters. Through this project, a 43 percent reduction in CO2 emission (3,981 tonnes/day) is expected in 2021 vis-à-vis a business-as-usual scenario (5,687 tonnes/day). To enable the adoption and use of e-vehicles, the project team is developing a sustainable mobility ecosystem in the city which includes electric vehicles as well as the setting up of charging infrastructure. Various operating models have been studied for this infrastructure with multiple recommendations. The City has decided to go ahead with a public private partnership model. Based on Eco-Cities India’s recommendations, TMC has also decided to promote the usage of electric vehicles by subsidizing the charging rates for three years. An initial budget of Rs 10 crore (€1.2 million) has been allocated for this initiative.

Recently, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) signed MOUs with Mahindra Group and Kinetic Green to develop an integrated smart electric mobility platform in Thane City. This is a first-of-its-kind agreement between a City corporation and the private sector to help create an electric mobility ecosystem in an Indian City. The plan entails working with Thane City and engaging with relevant private partners to help develop an electric vehicle ecosystem which addresses key mobility challenges for citizens – first/last mile connectivity, congestion and air pollution. Thane City will provide land for charging infrastructure (and no other costs), while private partners would provide end to end solutions through the deployment of electric vehicles and the development of charging infrastructure. IFC will continue to support Thane and its partners in the implementation process.
